According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), Legionella bacteria can cause two different diseases: Legionnaire’s disease and Pontiac fever. Legionnaire’s disease causes pneumonia, and is considered more severe, while Pontiac fever is a milder illness more akin to influenza. People over the age of 50 and those with other medical conditions are more vulnerable to the effects of Legionella bacteria. Preventing Legionella in cooling towers is a vital measure in protecting people who work around or in cooling tower plants from getting Legionnaire’s disease or Pontiac fever.
